Totally Extreme and Completely Absolute!

Grammar activity – Non-gradable adjectives
Adjectives describe qualities or characteristics of nouns: small, curious, important, etc.  To give extra intensity, grade or impact, we can add an adverb before: very small, totally curious, really important, etc.
The problem is that the combination is NOT arbitrary
  • Some adjectives can vary in intensity. For example: “hot” and “cold”. We can say “it’s very hot” or “it’s very cold”.  The adjective hot and cold are gradable.
  • Other adjectives cannot vary in intensity or grade because they are:
    1. extremes (for example: freezing, unique, horrible)
    2. absolutes (for example: dead, red, wrong)
Extreme or absolute adjectives are often lonely!
Extreme and absolute adjectives cannot be used with adverbs like VERY, EXTREMELY, RATHER, etc. :  “The dog was very dead”  is incorrect.
Often these are used alone:  It was freezing outside. The dog was dead.

Some extreme/absolute adjectives: alive, awful, black, boiling, certain, correct, dead, enormous, environmental, excellent, freezing, furious, gigantic, huge, impossible, miniscule, mortal, perfect, pregnant, principal, ridiculous, right, superb, terrible, terrified, unique, unknown, white, whole, wrong.

Extreme Adverb + Extreme/Absolute Adjective
However, an extreme adjective is not entirely lonely! It can be used with "extreme adverbs", for example:
ABSOLUTELY –  TOTALLY – COMPLETELY
Here are some example sentences with this combination:
  • Her attitude was absolutely awful.
  • The story is totally unique.
  • It is completely true.
*Others: entirely, exclusively, fully, largely, nearly, perfectly, practically, primarily, utterly.

Extreme sports are activities and practices which often involve speed, height, a high level of physical exertion, and specialized gear, ans are usually perceived as having a high level of danger

Some have been done for quite a while; others are more recent. Sometimes they involve teams and rules, but most often they are perfomed solo. People who take part use their skills and experience to control the risks. That control is what makes them sports and not just dangerous behavior.

Wakeboarding is a surface water sport which involves riding a wakeboard over the surface of a body of water. It was developed from a combination of water skiing, snowboarding and surfing techniques. The rider is usually towed behind a motorboat.

BMX bicycle races are sprint races on special circuits or tracks. They usually consists of a starting gate for up to eight racers, a groomed, serpentine, dirt race course made of various jumps and rollers and a finish line.

Skydiving or parachuting, is the action sport of exiting an aircraft and returning to Earth with the aid of gravity. Divers slow down during the last part of the descent by using a parachute. It may or may not involve a certain amount of free-fall, figures, etc.

Rock climbing is an activity in which participants climb up, down or across natural rock formations or artificial rock walls. The goal is to reach the summit of a formation or the endpoint of a usually pre-defined route without falling.

Skateboarding is an action sport which involves riding and performing tricks using a skateboard. Competition usually takes place in a bowl or skatepark.

Roller derby is a contact sport played by two teams of five members roller skating in the same direction around a track. Game play consists of a series of short matchups in which both teams designate a scoring player who scores points by lapping members of the opposing team.

The Extreme Case Of The Flat Earth

Conversation, Reading and Video Activity

1. Facts, Opinions and Going Too Far:
Read the following definition and discuss the questions that follow.

An opinion is a judgment, viewpoint, or statement about matters commonly considered to be subjective. It is the result of emotion or interpretation of facts. What distinguishes fact from opinion is that facts are verifiable.

  • Do you think you have strong opinions?
  • Are opinions important or just facts are?
  • Is there an extended opinion these days that you strongly disagree with?
  • Do you value the opinion of the media, TV news, newspapers, etc.? Why (not)?
  • What could you say is going too far in terms of opinions?

2.The Edge Of The World

(A) Read and analyze the poem below, and answer the two questions at the end.

Edge of the World
by Shel Silverstein*

Columbus said the world is round?
Don’t you believe a word of that.
For I’ve been down to the edge of the world,
Sat on the edge where the wild wind whirled,
peeked over the ledge where the blue smoke curls,
And I can tell you, boys and girls,
the world is FLAT!

  • What do you imagine you would think about the shape of the Earth if you were a prehistoric or caveman?
  • What would you base your ideas on?
  • How would you determine the shape of the planet?

*Shel Silverstein (1930-1999), was an American poet, singer-songwriter, musician, and cartoonist. His funny poems for children are memorable.

(B)Reading Segment: Read the text and answer the following question.
“What makes information acceptable and how do we discard facts from opinions?”

Even If The Earth Looks Flat...

From ancient times people have had different notions about the shape of our planet. Is the earth flat like a pancake or spherical like a globe?

Each concept has had its supporters. The Sumerians, Babylonians, ancient Egyptians, and most Greeks believed in a flat earth. Some ancient Greek scientists, as well as many Church Fathers like Albertus Magus, and St. Thomas supported the round earth.

Intuitively, our simple observations support a flat planet. Some early explanations for this idea used a vivid imagination, including water on all edges, pillars to hold up the sky, and a giant turtle and elephants to hold up the world. Later, with travels to other lands and better observation of star movements these explanations became less acceptable. In late medieval and early modern times,  Copernicus, Galileo, Columbus, and Magellan started expanding the notion of a round earth.

The process of science is based on curiosity and insistence on evidence. People who are more dependent on opinions or media have not developed skills for being skeptical of information sources. Many could still believe nowadays that the Earth is flat. However opinions do not turn into facts just for the number of supporters, even if they seem to be the most popular ones.
